India's capital Rises to Hazardous Smog Following Celebrations
Tuesday brought residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" range.
Alarming Air Quality Measurements
Several parts of Delhi registered an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended limit set by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above safe limits.
Firecracker Ban and Recent Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous smog that engulfs the city as colder weather begins.
Yet in recent months, the newly elected local leadership approached the judicial authority to seek a easing of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – previously questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Judicial Ruling and Reality
Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, the court agreed to the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during specific time windows throughout the Diwali.

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the festival also sparked a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming declining air quality in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the celebrations.

Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in Delhi have remained as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.
Near Diwali, the amount of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak readings ever documented in China's capital, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated city.
Multiple Contamination Factors
This crisis in the capital is resulting from a mix of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, garbage fires and haze from farm burning in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, generating dangerous smog that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air sets in.
Public Health and Financial Consequences
The economic and health impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to various studies.
This pollution results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can even lead to cancer.
The pollution is estimated to be causing 10,000 untimely fatalities annually in the capital.
